31 South:

Redlining Reloaded and Addressed

The Mortgage Wall

As a New Jersey resident, an activist, and an artist, our mortgage denial was not meant to become statistics. With the collaboration of my colleague, Dr. Martin Calvino, I found a way to open the doors.

We researched housing inequality and its history and got to the end of the rainbow, eventually understanding the market and fighting back with art and research.

Together, we created an art exhibition called "31 South" that tells the story of housing inequality.

We also shared our story with others and invited Futuro Investigates to bring the story to the community, where it will eventually have a bigger impact.

When we join forces with others, we empower ourselves to create equity for all.

For us, as citizens of a democracy, if we encounter locked doors and missed opportunities. We citizens should find a way to reclaim our place in democracy and take control of our future as much as possible. This could involve taking action to unlock doors that have been closed off or finding alternative paths to success and fulfillment. Ultimately, the message is one of empowerment and agency, encouraging viewers to take ownership of their lives and societal roles.
