I have imaginary conversations with its characters, mostly with “The Rabbit,” to whom I would tell.

“Sit,” “ What’s new?”

“Lots,” he would say.

In moments of rejection, I do think about her inspiring artwork and the person she was. This is a younger me, “ Me and Myself-Portrait.”

Image that you have to apply for a job. You are sipping your morning coffee, and you open your email. As you go through your inbox, you read your 19th rejection letter.

Upon the moment of discovery, how would you feel? Who is there for you, either present physically or in your imagination, that helps you feel like a worthy person no matter what?

Because I learned my favorite quote from you:

It seems like I am always saying goodbye. It was tiresome to be always and forever “saying goodbye.”

So, the first time I heard you say, “ Let me be happy because it happened, not sad because it's over,” I nodded yes. The quote provided me with a cheering new perspective.

I still observe myself quoting that line, which has provided me with so much comfort in key moments of my life over many years and probably many more. Loss is inevitable; we only have the power to own our perspective over those inevitable losses.
